REVOLUTION OS Screening, January 20, 2003

revos.jpg The Linux Users' Group of Davis (www.lugod.org) celebrated their four-year anniversary on Monday, January 20, 2003.

Along with free food and cake, give-aways and raffles, LUGOD screened the independent film "REVOLUTION OS," which tells the tale of computer programmers who rebelled against Microsoft's dominance and created the Linux computer operating system and the 'Open Source' movement.

The film included interviews with key personalities from the Linux and Open Source communities, including Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux operating system; Richard Stallman, founder of GNU and the Free Software Foundation; and Brian Behlendorf, a developer of "Apache," the world's most popular web serving software.

Raffle and give-away items included:

  • CodeWeavers' "CrossOver Plugin" and "CrossOver Office", which allow Linux users install and run Windows-only software such as Microsoft Office and Apple Quicktime, without resorting to dual-booting or emulation.

  • Various books from O'Reilly & Associates.
