Linux Users' Group of Davis - "Serving the Sacramento, California region"

The Linux Users' Group of Davis is a 501(c)(7) non-profit computer club serving the Sacramento region, consisting of hundreds of people who share an interested in the Linux® operating system, Free & Open Source software and other related topics — both technical and non-technical.

Our goals are to advocate the use of Linux and Open Source, to educate the community on these software alternatives, and to support and provide a social network for local Linux users.

LUGOD holds regular meetings twice a month. On the first Tuesday of each month, we hold a social gathering at a local restaurant or café, and on the third Monday of each month we meet at the Davis Public Library to listen to informative presentations by guest speakers. (Day, time and location subject to change!)

We also hold other events and workshops and maintain a number of active mailing lists (some with over 200 subscribers), an IRC channel for live chatting, and communities on social networks (Facebook and LinkedIn).

Our meetings, events and membership, are free and open to the general public. Join us!

* Back to the Terminal
Presented by
Bill Kendrick

Graphical User Interfaces, popularized by with Apple's Macintosh in 1984, and Microsoft's Windows 3.1 in 1992 and Windows95 in 1995, have been a great boon to multimedia creation and consumption -- photography, video, desktop publishing, web browsing, and more. However, the venerable terminal is still there, ready to tackle important tasks -- not just on Linux, but also under macOS / Mac OS X, and Windows!

In this talk, we'll discuss some interesting tools that can grant access to things you'd not expect be available on low-powered, non-graphical systems (for example, 30+ year old 8-bit home computers like Ataris, Apple IIs, and Commodore 64s!)

Email, Twitter, online chat (IRC, Slack, and various Instant Messengers), web browsing, word processing, spreadsheets, and even multitasking, are all possibilities!

Posted Wed. January 18, 7:55pm
Tim Thatcher, our treasurer, offered to nominate himself for the vacant vice president ("sys") position, if someone else would be willing to step in as treasurer ("/dev/null"). Will Marshall nominated himself at this week's general meeting, and both positions were accepted by those in attendance with no objection. (No vote was held, since both were running unopposed.) Congratulations and thanks!

That said, LUGOD is still in need of a president! If you're interested in nominating yourself or someone else, email typescript at
