What is "Open Source?"

"Open Source" is a kind of license agreement for computer software. (The "open" is compared to "proprietary" or "secret.")

Linux and many applications you can use with Linux, are "Open Source" products.

The definition is complicated, but the most important aspects are:

  • Anyone may freely sell or redistribute the program
  • The source code must be made available
  • Derived works may be made
