  • Wikimedia infrastructure > difference between wikipedia (encyclopedia), mediawiki (software), wikimedia (foundation / movement), how they fund raise and how the funds are used, Open source philosophy: content is CC-BY-SA / GFDL, GPLv2+, servers ubuntu, all open source, Infrastructure: primary datacenter in Tampa, Amsterdam, Virginia. Architecture: LAMP on steroids, Squid / Varnish for caching, Caching invalidated by on-demand purging (when edited), use Memcache for Parse results and translations, MYSQL: separate database for each wiki split over 7 or 8 clusters, External storage for retaining every edit, Media storage is not scalable and accessed via NFS, moving toward OpenStack Swift, Thumbnail generation done on servers > going to swift, LVS-DR used for load balancing, geoDNS for load balancing based on CNAMEs, SSL termination working, Wikimedia labs
