Project Reports

  • Installfests — Thanks to new LUGOD memebr Dan Fiske, the last LUGOD Linux Installfest was held earlier this month (Saturday, June 12th) at the N Street Cohousing commonhouse in Davis. Richard Harke reported that approximately 5 systems were brought, and 8-12 people were in attendance. Parking was a little difficult, but network speed at the facility was great (15Mb). Grant Bowman from the Ubuntu California LoCo (Local Community) team was there, as was someone who had a system full of distro ISOs, which he was able to burn to disc on demand. IF coordinator Alex Mandel was not in attendance, but between photos of the event, and Richard and Anthony Serna's comments, it's likely that we'll try to hold IFs there again. The next IF is scheduled at this point.
  • LERT — No report.
  • Library — Bill Kendrick is speaking with CSU Bakersfield on the easiest and cheapest way to get our Lending Library to their CS department, possibly by finding someone who planning to travel between Davis and Bakersfield. First-time LUGOD attendee Daniel Scrivano has suggested that he might be able to help with that!

Other Business

  • News — Tonight's originally-scheduled guest speaker, Owen Delong of Hurricane Electric, was unable to attend and do his presentation on IPv6 socket programming. On short notice, Brian Lavender offered to do a presentation (see below). Owen has offered to come in February to talk about IPv6.

July's LUGOD meeting will be on "Eventlet", a networking library for Python created by Linden Lab, creators of "Second Life."

August's meeting was originally scheduled to be a talk on NSLU2-Linux, but the scheduled speaker, LUGOD member Michael Wenk, suggested that the topic may be outdated. Upon querying the group, it was decided that we'd present a screening of a film by the Free Software Foundation (FSF): "Patent Absurdity: how software patents broke the system".
  • Financial Report — $12.00 in voluntary dues were collected tonight.

No news regarding California tax exempt status; LUGOD treasurer Greg FitzGerald could not attend tonight's meeting. He is also still waiting to receive all previous financial material from LUGOD's previous treasurer, Henry House.
  • Becoming a UC Davis "Campus Affiliate Group" — No report.
  • Explorit membership — No report.

Presentation

  • Brian Lavender, a Master's of Science student in the Computer Science Department at California State University, Sacramento (Sac State) did a presentation entitled "Algorithms to do Network Intrusion Detection, and integration into nProbe."
