2002.10.21 Meeting Notes

News

  • Doug from IBM talked about some recent IBM/Linux news: IBM has expanded their 'Linux Integration Center' by opening a new center in Germany. IBM and Redhat have announced an alliance. RedHat will be supporting their server software on IBM e-, z-, i- and p-Series servers.
  • Linux 2.5 development kernel is nearing (its first attempt at) feature freeze!
  • Upcoming expansion to XFree86: 'RandR' - change resolution, refresh rate, and even rotation of the display, on the fly!

Project Reports

  • Demo - There's currently no demo scheduled for November. This may change.

  • Installfests - The last Installfest was yesterday, Oct. 20th. 14 people brought their computer, and everything went smoothly! The next IF will be Sunday, November 17th. Rusty will not be able to attend, so he needs someone else to take his place!

  • LERT - No known recent LERT calls.

  • Library - No known library activity.

  • Linux Class - LUGOD will be holding another introductory Linux class with DCN (Davis Community Network) on Wednesday, November 13th. The topic will be "Linux for Home and Small Business Networks." If you can help out, please post to the new 'vox-outreach' mailing list!

Other Business

  • Public Kiosk and Newsbeat - Bill Kendrick picked up the new kiosk machine from Omsoft. It's a Pentium 233. He installed Debian 3.0 (Woody) and KDE 3.0 (because of its new 'kiosk framework'). It's set up to auto-login to KDE (no login prompt), and will be locked down so that no preferences can be changed; no shell or filesystem access can occur, etc.

  • Next Meeting at Novozymes - November 5th is election day, so LUGOD won't be able to meet at the library. Instead we'll be meeting at Novozymes in South Davis. Details and maps will be on LUGOD.org.

  • Financial Report - $31.00 in voluntary dues were collected. $15.00 were spent for the room at the library.
