2001.06.18 Meeting Notes

News

  • A new fungus has been discovered that eats the aluminum in CDs!
  • Microsoft finally legally bought the name "XBOX", which it had been planning to use for its upcoming game system
  • GCC 3.0 released. First major release in 9 years.
  • Microsoft is supposedly using Open Source Software in their OS
  • GnuCash 1.6.0 was released last week.

Project Reports

  • Demo - The next demo will be July 21st at the Davis Food Co-Op. Contact Henry House if you'd like to help.

  • LERT - Foo Lim helped Eric Engelhard.
  • Installfests - The last Installfest was yesterday, held at Z-World. Seven or eight people were helped (not bad for Father's Day and UCD Graduation weekend!)

Due to the strange way Windows 2000 deals with bootloading, we lost our first Win2K system. Fortunately, it had been backed up. Also, the Linux install on the machine went well!

July's Installfest is still up in the air. We may be collaborating with Roseville LUG and/or SacLUG, and may be holding the IF outside of Davis, as a result. Davis IFs at UCD will resume when school's back in.

Other Business

  • Ice Cream FUNdraiser for EFF - LUGOD held an ice cream "FUNdraiser" to help raise money for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It was held at Ben & Jerry's in Davis on Wed. June 13th. Robin Gross, an EFF Attorney was there with membership forms and t-shirts. At around 8:30, she headed to SacLUG to promote EFF at the end of their regular meeting.

  • Financial Report - $47.65 in voluntary dues were collected. Stephen Helps donated a PCMCIA laptop Ethernet adapter for LUGOD to use at Installfests.

  • Ruby Talk - Some folks are interested in LUGOD hosting a talk on Ruby and/or Smalltalk programming languages.
