2000.08.21 Meeting Notes

News

  • Dell is making Linux servers (with RedHat installed).
  • Penguin Corp at Linux World Expo saw a demonstration of the Dell, which crashed.
  • Bill Gates previously owned shares in RedHat!
  • Linux World Expo was packed and had good 'swag,' as well as more sponsored booths.
  • Bill Kendrick announced that out of eleven people at Baker's Square after the last meeting, all but one person had two or more computers. Marianne had 11 total. The average was 4.8 computers per person.

Committee Reports

  • Demo - A demo is scheduled for this Saturday, but Henry hasn't said anything about it.

  • DCN - DCN still wants to work on refurbishing computers, but still has nowhere to house them. In the meantime, people can bring them home to work on. Contact Richard Lowenberg: rl@dcn.davis.ca.us.

  • Other LUGs
No LUGs have posted topics for any upcoming meetings yet!

Other Business

  • Financial Report - $42.35 was collected in voluntary donations.

  • Carpool - LUGOD is working on implementing a carpool-to-meetings program, in which anyone who will need a ride will e-mail typescript (the secretary), and there will be a map determining who's closest to that person that can give them a ride. Anyone who wants to volunteer to be a carpooler, e-mail Jennifer at typescript@lugod.org.

  • Officer's Meeting - On Friday August 18th, officers of LUGOD (and a few other members) held a meeting. Minutes are online. Summary:
    • Money we've collected needs to be deposited into the bank
    • Every 6 months, typescript will e-mail members who appear to be inactive (no posts to any mailing lists, no meeting attendance) to see if they're still interested in being considered a member. (This is necessary since the club has no membership dues, so there's no real expiration.)
    • New T-shirts will be printed (possibly with a new design).

Presentation

  • Micah Cowan did an excellent talk on the basics of the Perl programming language. (He has been invited back to continue!)
