What Does It Do?

SDL handles 8-, 16-, 24- and 32-bit graphics, and 8- and 16-bit mono and stereo audio, CD audio.

SDL understands keyboard, mouse, application visibility, and quit events.

It also handles threads, timers and endian independence.
