Along with all of the reasons Open Source in general is good, Linux has proven to have a number of other advantages:
- Runs on Older Hardware
Linux is scalable. Since the source code is available, people can pick-and-choose what parts of Linux they need and want. This lets Linux run on very old computers (Pentiums and even 486s and 386s) just as easily as it runs on new computers (2GHz dual-processor Athlons).
- Runs on a Variety of Computers
Linux doesn't just run on PCs. It also runs on Macs, handheld computers, classic computers, and multi-million-dollar mainframes!
- No Viruses
As unbelievable as it may sound, there are no viruses for Linux!
- Stability
Linux is stable. Many people have Linux systems that have run without crashes or 'reboots' for over a year!
- Lots of Support
Along with documentation and support from commercial companies that sell their own versions of Linux, there's also tons of material available on the Internet, including online documentation, support e-mail lists, web forums, and live chat areas. There are also thousands of Linux User Groups all over the globe.
