Meeting Minutes

Rasmus Lerdorf
PHP Hypertext Processing Language

Z-World, Davis

Photos by Bill Kendrick and Thomas (Marty) Harwell-Weiler

A collection of raffle items sent from O'Reilly and Associates.

Our free stuff table. It got ravaged and then dismantled to make way for the immense crowd!

We had at least 40 people in the room long before the meeting began!

After introductions, news and club business, we did the raffle!

Melissa Hardenbrook helping Rasmus pick out raffle tickets.

T-Shirts first, to tease...

Then on to books, like "Programming PHP" that Emily Stumpf won...

All in all, nearly 70 people showed up!

By 7:20, Rasmus began his talk...

(And the camera was adjusted for the lighting...)

"PHP is a Server-side language"

More Rasmus...

After showing a long C program, and a short but confusing Perl program, here's how PHP does it...

PHP is growing immensely in popularity!

Rasmus's slides were actually a live webserver using PHP scripts to parse 'slide' XML files. (Mozilla was used to view them.) Here, he inserts a syntax error into the slide's "example" PHP for us to show that the slides are live!

More Rasmus...

Rasmus's son, CaRL.

Rasmus answering questions.

PHP can draw pictures, and use alpha transparency blending, too!

Here, a JPG is converted into colored HTML ASCII characters!

Images on the fly!

Another on the fly image!

In Rasmus's PDF-on-the-fly example, some noticed the amusing company name used in an invoice.

PHP can even do Shockwave Flash on the fly!

After the talk, Rasmus signed autographs for people
