News

• RIAA (Record industry's) website defaced. It even featured a pirated copy of a Linkin Park MP3 which remained online for four days!
• Bulldozer rams wrong house (Hollywood Florida)
• Broadband hits the South Pole, thanks to fiber optic cable (about 1600km!)
• Opera browser version 7 in the works - a rewrite to be even FASTER, and more compatible.
• Drivers for the Radeon 8500/8500LE video card are now available for Linux (for XFree86 4.1.0 and 4.2.0). Not to be confused with the ones being paid for by The Weather Channel.
• AMD 2600+ CPU released; clocked at 2.13 GHz.
• Australian telecomm Telestra will be deploying 45,000 Linux desktops. (Microsoft's "Licensing 6.0" prompted the move.)
• Air New Zealand replacing 150 Compaq servers running NT with a single IBM mainframe running Linux, as well as 4000 MS Exchange email and file/print servers with Linux and Open Source apps.
• Australia's Bureau of Veteran Affairs to replace all file and print servers with Linux, and considering it for the desktop.
• AMD's 64bit "Hammer" CPU now claled "Opteron"
• ISP bans RIAA to protect customers, because RIAA is planning to introduce destructive executables (trojans) into peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, like Gnutella. (A bill by Calif. congressman Howard Berman is attempting to make these trojans legal.)
• China's government is blocking its people from accessing Google.com search engine now.
• Steven Lisberger, the man behind the movie TRON, is working with Disney on TRON 2.0.
• SuSE 8.0 has been successfully booted on a Microsoft XBox game console.
• Venezuelan government to go completely open source.
• British Telecomm (BT)'s "hyperlink" patent thrown out in court. You may still use hyperlinks in your websites. :^)
• Tuxgames.com is taking preorders of Doom 3.
• Tuxgames.com predicts they'll be out of Loki Games stock soon.
• Unreal Tournament 2003 game client is being developed for Linux.

• Demo - The next demo will be Sept. 14th at the Davis Food Co-Op.

• Installfests - The next Installfest will be Sept. 15th.

• LERT - No LERT news.

• Library - No news.

Other Business

• Mac OS X Conference Raffle - O'Reilly and Associates asked us to do a raffle for a free pass to their Mac OS X conference, taking place in late September, early October, in Santa Clara. Kevin Murakoshi played on behalf of his friend Matt, and won!

• Church Website to Web Server OS Match-Up - Pete had a game where people tried to match up which websites ran which webservers. Winners got their pick of some swag (O'Reilly Mac OS X books, a copy of Mozilla 1.0 on CD, a Trolltech t-shirt, a No Starch Press t-shirt, and some copies of DemoLinux)

• Financial Report - $49.66 in voluntary dues were collected. $15.00 were spent for the room at the library.
