I spoke to one of the UCD techies via email about this system after it
repeatedly spammed one campus mailing list with "you have sent an email
infected with blah" (blah being one of those From: forging viruses). The
response he gave was they know the messages to both sender and recipient
can be annoying, especially when the From: field is forged or the email is
automatically generated and sent by the virus, but they send them to
absolve themselves of liability. The example he gave for not changing the
system to squelch the messages was that they don't want to be responsible
for some professor/staff missing a deadline for a submission because the
virus system flagged the email as infected and didn't notify both ends of
what it did. Also, apparently the system is an all or nothing system... it
has to squelch all messages or none at all. It can't just squelch "foo"
virus emails for example.
