[vox] May is DCN Education Month
As you all probably know, some members of LUGOD are presenting a
"Linux on the Desktop" introductory Linux class as a
Davis Community Network class/workshop on May 22nd.
They also have quite a few other interesting topics going on, too,
including one on Open Source web applications (like ZOPE) and a workshop
on 802.11(b)!

May is DCN Education Month
May will be a special DCN classes and workshops month.
Davis Community Network is making a dedicated effort to provide more
Internet related classes and informational workshops for its community.
Ten different topic sessions in May will provide a wide range of practical
knowledge and technical assistance. Make a note of the dates posted below,
and select to come to the classes or workshop of interest to you. You must
contact DCN to reserve a seat, by calling 750-1170, or emailing rl@dcn.org
All classes are held at the City of Davis Computer Lab, 600 A Street
(between City Hall and the Senior Center). Stay tuned for additional
program announcements.
Internet Security Basics
Thurs. May 2 - 6:30-8:00
Instructor: Steve McMahon
Specifics on safe computing, security and Internet practices. Learn how
to protect your system from unwanted infections and attacks, and what to
do if the 'worst' happens.
HTML Basics
Mon. May 6 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: Anne Hance
A hands-on workshop introducing html coding using Notepad or Wordpad for
creation of raw html files. Step one for novice web page creators.
Open Source Web Applications
Thurs. May 9 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: S. McMahon
The DCN Web Team is deploying new web services using 'open-source' tools,
such as Zope. Join us to learn more about the open source movement and
web-content management, service and application building tools.
Wireless (802.11b) Workshop
Fri. May 10 - 12:00-1:30
Richard Lowenberg
Join DCN's invited guest experts in a presentation and discussion about
the various wireless telecommunications systems now available; technical
considerations; costs; security issues; applications; and citing of
specific examples. Focus on 802.11b and regional initiatives.
To be held at Davis City Council Chambers.
Internet Drop-In
Mon. May 13 - 5:30-6:30
Inst: Anne Hance & Lois Richter
DCN continues to offer this free, open Q & A class for beginners and
more adept Internet users who have basic Internet related questions that
need clear hands-on answers.
Intro to Flash MX
Thurs. May 16 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: Seth Duffey
Learn the basics of creating Flash MX web applications. Flash can help
you create rich user interfaces with video and multimedia features.
HTML / Web Site Review
Mon. May 20 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: A. Hance & Richard Reid
This is a hands-on session with personal assistance, for those groups
who have developed a web page and need specific help or want their page
critiqued.
Please include your web site address when applying for this class.
Linux for Beginners [ "Linux for the Office", specifically ]
Wed. May 22 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: LUGOD [ Rod Roark, Tom Burnett, Richard Crawford, Bill Kendrick ]
The Linux User Group of Davis once again is offering an introduction to
Linux: What is it; how would I use it, what do I need to know to get
started; where do I get further information?
[ Specific apps. to be discussed: KDE and KOffice, The Gimp, Evolution ]
Web Design 101
Thrus. May 23 - 6:30-8:30
Inst: Richard Reid
A presentation/demonstration giving broad outline information about:
web page design theory, tools, site planning, page layout, and web images.
List Server and Forum Management
Thurs. May 30 - 6:30-8:00
Inst: Steve McMahon
This class will offer tips on the management of these useful online tools,
for those who want to set up and start discussion groups.
