excerpt from
http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/052/business/Microsoft_changes_Media_Player_privacy_statement+.shtml

Microsoft Corp. said that its Windows Media Player software tracks the
music and movies played by its users, and the company said yesterday it
has changed its privacy statement after the Associated Press raised
questions about the practice.

The change comes just a few weeks after Microsoft chairman Bill Gates
issued a company-wide memo demanding that Microsoft build stronger
privacy and security features into its software.

''Users should be in control of how their data is used,'' Gates wrote.
''Policies for information use should be clear to the user. Users should
be in control of when and if they receive information to make best use of
their time.'' But Microsoft didn't notify users of Windows Media Player that
the product uses ID tags known as ''cookies'' to track the way customers
use the software.

The new privacy policy was issued yesterday. The new statement makes
clear that information is being downloaded for both DVDs and CDs but
does not explain how users can eliminate or get into the log file.

====

i'm waiting for the day that they announce that any file with ".mp3"
found on your hard drive gets transmitted to microsoft.com. too bad
that stolen windows source code never surfaced. it would've made a
great read!
