Re: [vox] [OT] unions

I also agree with Joel, that unions once their purpose but are no longer
really necessary. Unions have gotten way out of control. For example, I
was recently hired with American Medical Response in Sacramento County, and,
in doing so was made to join Local 250 (the Healthcare Workers Union).
About the time I was hired, the AMR contract expired. The union voted to
strike, probably a week before my hire date. Immediately after my
"initiation" into the union, I was told that I was expected to strike a week
from that day. Now, for my 1st year of employment I am a probationary
employee (i.e. can be fired at will). Now, if I were to strike (an action
which was voted on before my hiring) management couldn't fire me for that,
but could easily find something afterwards to can me for, something to union
couldn't stop. I have a problem with any organization who expects it's
members to blindly follow something they don't believe in, never had a say
in, and could result in their termination. Fortunately, a judge ruled, for
various reasons, that the strike would be illegal and so it never happened.
Anyone want to know why the union wanted to strike? Union leadership
promised the employees an $8/hr raise, and didn't want to renig on that
promise. If you ask me, this whole union thing is a farce. At least my
union is...
