I was about to boot my live CD and then gave a manual mount a try.
Solved that problem. Wished Synaptic had warned me though that I was 
about to remove some pretty critical items, that and I should read 
through what's going to be removed when I add a package.

Of course this still leaves me wondering how to get my usb devices 
hooked up, oh well thats another day/topic...
