Sounds like you are lacking any routes.

Does your /etc/network/interfaces file look something like:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback
  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet static

You can confirm whether these settings made it with "route -n":
  Kernel IP routing table
  Destination   Gateway      Genmask        Flags Metric Ref Use Iface  U     0      0   0   eth0        UG    0      0   0   eth0
