Sounds like you are lacking any routes.

Does your /etc/network/interfaces file look something like:

  auto lo
  iface lo inet loopback
  auto eth0
  iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.1.2
        netmask 255.255.255.0
        network 192.168.1.0
        broadcast 192.168.1.255
        gateway 192.168.1.1

You can confirm whether these settings made it with "route -n":
  Kernel IP routing table
  Destination   Gateway      Genmask        Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
  192.168.1.0   0.0.0.0      255.255.255.0  U     0      0   0   eth0
  0.0.0.0       192.168.1.1  0.0.0.0        UG    0      0   0   eth0
