brad, no doubt you're using kernel source from a distribution.

get a clean source from www.kernel.org; you won't get these errors.

i don't know what distros do to kernel source, but debian is the only distro
whose kernel source package compiles out of the box.  a number of people have
seen this strange phenomenon.
