yup, that was the 1st thing i looked at. my tables are as simple as simple
could be:

my tcpwrappers look ok, and i don't have any ipchains (my kernel doesn't
support them; i can't find ipchains support in 2.4.0test9 -- i can only find
netfilter, and i don't have netfilter installed.
i still can't lynx to /., freshmeat, deja.com or scour. i can connect to
just about everything else i've tried. my connection is slower than what
i'm used to before we moved, but other than that, everything else seems ok.
i can live without /. or freshmeat, but i need scour and NEED deja.com.
