Yeah, I figured that out after John replied to me.  I'll
share what I told him here:

OK, I get it now.  Yes there is bias against HTML email,
which comes from two directions:

(1) The notion that nobody who sends "real" email has time
to decorate it with HTML, so HTML mail is usually spam; and

(2) The fact that accepting HTML in email makes it easier to
get a virus or have your privacy compromised.
